The Story of Kapoto Camp

Discover how a shared dream became Kapoto Camp

Our Story

Kapoto Camp began as a dream born out of a chance meeting in the heart of the Masai Mara. Zac first visited the Mara in August 2011, drawn by its breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife. During that trip, he met Petro, one of the best wildlife guides in the region. From the moment they connected, Zac knew there was something extraordinary about Petro—his deep knowledge of the land, his unmatched expertise with wildlife, and the warm, welcoming way he shared his culture and stories.

Captivated by the Mara’s beauty and Petro’s incredible guidance, Zac returned twice in 2012. He continued to return year after year, staying with Petro and his family in their village just outside the reserve. These visits deepened their friendship and mutual respect. Over countless evenings spent sharing stories around the fire, the idea of creating something together began to take shape.

For years, Zac and Petro nurtured the dream of building a camp that would reflect their shared love for the land, the wildlife, and the Maasai culture. It was a vision of offering guests an authentic and enriching experience while giving back to the local community.

August 2011: The first meeting in the heart of the Masai Mara—Zac and Petro’s journey begins, forging a bond that would lead to the creation of Kapoto Camp.

A decade later, that dream has become a reality: Kapoto Camp. Kapoto, which means “the wise man of the village” in Maasai, is named after Petro’s middle name. The camp stands as a testament to wisdom, perseverance, and partnership.

Kapoto Camp is also unique in the Masai Mara, being one of the few true 50-50 partnerships between a non-local and a Maasai. This partnership reflects the trust, respect, and equality that have defined Zac and Petro’s relationship from the beginning. Together, they have created a camp that honors Petro’s heritage and Zac’s vision, combining local knowledge with global perspectives to offer an unparalleled experience.

Kapoto Camp isn’t just a place to stay—it’s a story of friendship, resilience, and a deep connection to the land and its people. Here, every guest is welcomed not just as a traveler but as a part of the story, invited to experience the Mara through the eyes of those who call it home.

Our Philosophy

Small by Design

With only five tents, Kapoto Camp offers a level of privacy and calm that is increasingly rare in the Masai Mara. Guests are never part of large groups or vehicle convoys. Every safari is shaped around your interests and the unfolding rhythm of wildlife.

Time and Patience

Extraordinary wildlife moments cannot be rushed. Our guides prioritize patience, anticipating animal movement, and positioning carefully for the best light and viewing conditions. The result is not just sightings but experiences that stay with you long after you leave.

Safari as It Was Meant to Be

Life at Kapoto moves with the natural rhythm of the Mara, rooted in a deep connection to the wild landscape, the people who protect it, and the rich Maasai culture that has shaped this land for generations, guiding every experience and moment shared here.

Our Location

Between the National Reserve and two Conservancies

Kapoto Camp is uniquely situated on private land just minutes from the Masai Mara National Reserve and bordering the Olare Orok and Mara North Conservancies. Located beyond the entrance gate, our camp enjoys exceptional access to wildlife that moves freely across these invisible boundaries. The result is a safari experience that feels both secluded and deeply connected to one of the most wildlife-rich landscapes in Africa.

Our Commitment to Community & Conservation

Kapoto Camp believes that extraordinary wildlife experiences must also support conservation and local communities. By keeping the camp small, employing local Maasai staff, and operating with a light footprint, we help protect the landscapes and wildlife that make the Masai Mara so remarkable. We are also proud to partner with conservation organizations working to safeguard this ecosystem and are building relationships with a local school to support education and opportunities within the community.

Part of a Larger Vision

Kapoto Camp is part of a broader mission through The Wildlife Collective, a global community dedicated to wildlife conservation, photography, and meaningful travel experiences. Through our work across Africa, Alaska, and other wild places around the world, we strive to connect people more deeply with nature while supporting the communities and landscapes that make these experiences possible.

Kapoto Camp reflects that philosophy — a place where extraordinary wildlife encounters, conservation, and cultural connection come together in one unforgettable safari experience.
